Interested in seeing a live NYC car accidents map of where NY car accident cases have occurred?  If so, one web developer has already done it!

Crashmapper, developed by NYC-based web developer John Krauss, compiles the N.Y.P.D.’s monthly public motor vehicle collision data reports to create an interactive map showing the safest and most dangerous intersections & roadways across all five boroughs.  The N.Y.P.D.’s monthly reports stemmed from New York City’s City Council unanimous passage of Jessica Lappin’s Saving Lives Through Better Information bill in 2011.  Under the bill, the N.Y.P.D. was encouraged to take the role of the N.Y.P.D. has been releasing monthly motor vehicle collision reports that cover topics varying from the total number of motor vehicle accidents to the most common types of motor vehicles involved and contributing factors.  The data also includes information regarding classifications of people involved in NYC car accidents, as well as data on injuries and fatalities resulting from these NYC car accident cases.  You can view the N.Y.P.D.’s most recent September 2013 motor vehicle collision report by clicking here.

Although the N.Y.P.D. has been releasing monthly reports on motor vehicle collision data since February 2011, the organization has only released data charts in PDF format, a format that has led some critics clamoring for more eye-appealing ways of presenting the data.  Because the N.Y.P.D. also organizes its data in alphabetical order instead of numerical order, the average reader would likely require more time to fully understand the N.Y.P.D.’s findings.  The N.Y.P.D. also does not release geolocation data with its motor vehicle collision reports that describe where most of the city’s car accident cases have occurred, which Krauss admitted was a major obstacle for him in creating Crashmapper.  Because of this, the average reader would need to pore through all of the N.Y.P.D.’s car accident case police reports to get truly get an idea of where in New York City most car accident cases have been occurring.

How Crashmapper Charts NYC Car Accident Cases

Krauss, however, has managed to solve this issue in developing Crashmapper.  Crashmapper compiles the N.Y.P.D.’s motor vehicle collision data into an interactive heat map.  Visitors can zoom in on each of the NYC boroughs to get a close look at the intersections and roadways that are often plagued by accidents.  The map is best viewed on Chrome, Safari and Firefox browsers, and viewers can use Krauss’s NYC car accident cases map to learn more about the following data categories:

  1. Collisions with injuries per intersection per month
  2. Collisions per intersection per month
  3. People involved per intersection per month
  4. Pedestrians injured per intersection per month
  5. Cyclists injured per intersection per month
  6. Passengers injured per intersection per month
  7. Motorists injured per intersection per month

Crashmapper users can also select a date range to view available N.Y.P.D. car accident data.  Because the N.Y.P.D. is two months behind the current month in terms of releasing its monthly reports, Crashmapper viewers can view data from August 2011 to the most recent month published by the N.Y.P.D.  Crashmapper also provides geocoded CSV files, as well as copies of the N.Y.P.D.’s original monthly PDF reports, as new data becomes available.
